Coach Steve Mikles is a 56 years old runner from Syracuse, NY. In 1979, he moved to Clearwater, FL. He began to seriously run in 1983, at the time where the running boom was hitting Florida. After many years of racing all sorts of races around the state, Steve narrowed it down his three favorite races. All three represent the bay area in one way or another. The Gasparilla 15K represents Tampa’s largest race, along with the Turkey Trot 10K, Clearwater’s largest race, and finally Max Bayne 1/2 marathon, at the end of the Tampa Bay Area, Ft. DeSoto Park & Beach. Finally, all three races have been around since the late 70’s. Steve’s biggest goal as a runner was to break a 5 minute mile before he turned 30. His PR’s proved that he did accomplish his goal!
Steve began his coaching career back in the early 90’s. He was also competing for Progressive Team in mid to late 90’s. He used to write and plan out workouts for his training partners. Then in 2004, he started coaching middle school.
Although he no longer races, Steve still enjoys doing the hard track workouts and help coach progressive runners on the Clearwater side.
